Before you install modifications on your ATV, UTV or off-road vehicle (ORV), know how to approach alterations to your vehicle with your insurance provider and understand how they might affect your coverage. In the most severe cases, undeclared modifications could result in claim denials or cancellation of your policy altogether. You should also disclose modifications because you'll want them covered in the event of an accident too.

What to do after modifying your ATV, UTV or off-road vehicle (ORV):

You are required to inform your insurer of modifications that alter your ATV, UTV or off-road vehicle's (ORV) original factory specifications. Some examples of modifications that must be reported include:

  • Suspension lift kits
  • Engine modifications (like turbo or nitrous oxide kits)
  • Winches, plows, or cargo racks
  • Lighting
  • Roll cages and safety equipment

Effects on Coverage:

Adding modifications to your ATV, UTV or off-road vehicle (ORV) may affect your insurance coverage in a variety of ways. Standard comprehensive and collision policies may offer some basic coverage for accessories, but more expensive modifications could require additional coverage. Certain modifications might require specialized accessory endorsements as well. While this is not always the case, you may also encounter accessory coverage limits with a standard policy. Modifications that add value to your vehicle or change its risk profile could result in higher premiums when specialized endorsements or coverage are necessary.
